On Telecommuting
At TnR Global, we have been telecommuting for a number of years. Most of us work from our home offices. This has been working great for us. We get to spend more time with out families. Getting out into cold New England mornings to drive to a physical office is not an issue any more. We are also proud of saving nature from pollution.
We are certainly not an exception, rather part of the wave. There were 10 mil people in the US and 34 mil people in the world who telecommuted > 8 hours per week in 2005*, and there are 9 mil of solopreneurs working from home**. About 10% of the total US workforce will telecommute more than 8 hours per week by 2008*.
Along the way of building our company, we have developed applications and methods to improve our communications and make us more productive even though we do not see each other every day.
As with any other work and life solution, telecommuting has its pluses and minuses. While there are many pluses, lack of social interaction, lack of physical activity, and no fine line between work and home are certainly issues that need to be constantly addressed.
I started this blog ‘On Telecommuting’ to tell the world about our experiences and our findings, as well as to hear back from readers about their experiences, address some of their questions, and find some solutions we may have not thought yet.
